Ding Ding round 1 and the “worst” fell race in Britain ……….

Ding Ding round 1 and the “worst” fell race in Britain.

I’m standing in a Thai fighting ring looking out at 400 cheering Glaswegians, chants of “go on big man” echo round the hall, there’s a huge powerful bear of guy grimacing at me from the other side of the ring and I have a fighting stick in one hand and a shield in the other, an announcer shouts “We have a 3 round battle in Lombok Stick fighting style”…….  Ding ding round 1….. instantly the bear runs at me and leaps high in the air , I instinctively sink down , raise my shield , BANG !! he pummels my shield with a huge  hit ,  my feet sink into the floor as I absorb the blow , Instantly it hits me , fight mode , I spring to my feet and bring up my guard , we attack each other , each time I get in close he overpowers me , I attack him and its like bouncing off a brick wall ,my hits just seem to bounce off him ,yet he hits my shield with monster blows that rock me on my feet , I am faster though and I go underneath his lunge and hit  him smack in the forehead but he doesn’t bleed , his granite head takes the full hit .. All I’ve done is succeed in riling him up a bit more … he piles in and we are wrestling… BANG !! He smacks my eye with his shield… the bell goes, I’m bleeding and its all over I’ve lost … first to bleed loses, the only rules…

2 weeks before Dave Scott of Sandbaggers Expedition fame, had asked me to stand in for his friend Jay, a Glasgow enforcer, a no mess hard man who “enforces”…. these two were going to fight it out at a Thai mixed martial arts show , all money going to charity .. however Jay had to cancel and Dave didn’t want to let the show down, I had laughed at him at first when he asked me , not a chance, I mean come on, who would risk that so close to going to the Marathon Des Sable, but the thought of the charity money and the buzz of taking him on gripped me and I couldn’t say no…….I had the fight skills, I just had to hone them to Sticks so it was on … Dave “the grizzler” Scott of Newton Mearns and Mark “mountain goat” Lyons of Hawick would battle it out in Glasgow town hall on Saturday 19th of February …  the result a brutal no holds battle, an amazed crowd going nuts for more, a big egg on Dave’s head and a big black eye on mine but a nice charity donation at the end …… result!!

My week leading up to the battle had been a tough one! with over 80 miles ran over the fields and nearly 10 miles swam in the pool… nothing like resting up before a fight, it was all good in the end though and after the fight I dropped Dave in Edinburgh at Dr Andrew Murrays wedding before heading back to the Borders.

the “worst” fell race in Britain ……….

I eventually grabbed about 5 hours kip before Kenny Short arrived bright and Early in the morning for us to travel to Kielder to run in “The Borderer” , reputed to be the “worst” fell race in Britain ,at nearly 18 miles long and with 4500 feet of climbing this is one super tough day out ,  made even tougher on the day by freezing fog , wind , thick snow and sub zero temperatures. We were met by “KJ” hawicks Keith Murray , this guy is a fell runner of the highest calibre and is often in the top 10 finishers , he really can go some .. Between KJ, Kenny and Billy Fraser , Hawick is certainly well represented in the top 20 of most races.

The first 2 miles raced up a super steep hill into a forest ,think a 2 mile long Millpeth , then it turned a corner and it got steeper!!  my legs were on fire , calves were like rocks by the top and I was glad to see the first checkpoint at the mast , from here we raced over the Northumberland fells overlooking Kielder , Englands last great wilderness ,  from high up on the Deadwater fell we ran through snow , heather and knee deep mud over to Peel , then down to the Kielder stone before a long hard climb to Knox knowe , Grey Knowe and Greys Pike before racing back down to the castle … this was one super tough hillfest of a race , apparently one of the toughest most gruelling races in the fell runner calendar and I certainly wont argue against that  .. It was fantastic !

The crowd was great, the usual eclectic mix of fell runners from all over ,  fell running is a close community and even after only a couple of races I’m getting to know a few faces … its a friendly affair and not as competitive as road running , races are judged on how tough they are and times really don’t come into it for the most part .. and the Ready, Steady Go!!! nature of it all is raw and exciting, just pay your money in the morning , line up and try to make it to the end alive and still uninjured …. amazing , if there is one thing I am sure of , it is that once Ive finished with the deserts and mountains , I will most certainly be Fell running for a long time after.

Prana , Mother Nature and Paying forward.

Prana , Mother Nature and Paying forward.

“What is it about ultra-runners that leads so many to run for a cause? Maybe we’re just a philanthropic bunch? More likely, in my view, it’s because we are well acquainted with the notion of something out there bigger than ourselves – something WAY bigger than ourselves. Be it the distance itself, the friendships found on mountain tops in the depth of night, the tenacity required at sea level in the sweltering heat of summer, or the fortitude that found us in the dry dusty, wonderful sands of the desert. The specific reason really doesn’t matter that much, what does matter is that runners all over the world keep on thinking up new ways to try to pay it forward one step at a time”

I read this and it got me to thinking that this is not just common among ultra runners but rather to people who see beyond themselves in general , people who leave their surroundings , their lifestyle and hence their comfort zone to experience a little of the unknown……

I personally began to feel it when I started rock climbing, there really is nothing like sitting on a tiny ledge 1000 feet up a sheer cliff looking down at the landscape spread out before you to give an appreciation of just how small and insignificant we really are and to open your eyes to the beauty and grandeur of the planet we live on. Indeed my time in the Himalaya both in the mountains and on the rivers has given me absolute respect for the enormous scale that Mother Nature works in and that we as the human race, never mind as an individual are but a whisper on the wind when you look at her grand plan!! She moves mountains and spins planets so she does!!!

Through my experiences in these places I have been witness to and experienced spiritualism, a huge realisation of something way beyond our understanding, yet totally understandable if you can open yourself to the possibility of it all ……I’m not talking gods and ghosts here , I am talking about soul and belief , easiest to grasp is the feeling of the kindred spirit , the deep bonding of people who are facing adventure , endurance , risk and even death together  , this leads to deep connections that cannot be broken , friendships that endure years even after only one shared experience  and great respect towards each other for the things we face together  and individually ..  Spiritualism can be the clarity of thought that comes from huge effort , the force that comes from nowhere when you really need it , to experience this is a magical thing , it is like your senses hone 100% to your focus and everything else becomes nothing .. It is you and your purpose, nothing else exists beyond this, the Chinese call it Chi… It is very real!!

Why ? once this realisation starts to enter our psyche, do we want to help others? is it because we want to be better people ourselves , atone for our past sins , to fill our place in this huge experience called life or maybe its simpler than all of that , maybe we just realise that we are blessed by the fact we here and want to deserve  that in some way.So we go out and find our cause , we stand up and make our self and our deeds known and hope that we raise both awareness and funding , we try to make our efforts worth something more than just to ourselves , we want to play as big a part in this world as we can .

Running seems to be the perfect place to channel this urge, there is a fantastic infrastructure of fundraising events like 10km, half and full marathons, Ultrathon, in fact you name it you can run it for a charity, this is great, the charities benefit greatly and the events are amazing to take part in, hundreds of thousands of people run in these events worldwide and the benefit to our society is unfathomable..  Many millions of pounds are raised and spent helping poverty, researching Cancer, helping old folks, supporting battered wives and kids and even maybe helping you.. so paying forward is the way we should all be …

The act of giving should create more giving … this is the way, a way to help the unfortunate become the fortunate .

Anything’s possible but you will never know until you try VERY hard!

Anything’s possible but you will never know until you try VERY hard…..

I was asked yesterday by a friend, someone who has known me for years, a guy who has seen some of my craziest climbing and kayaking exploits at first hand, a man who stood next to me in the Himalaya looking at huge crazy whitewater rapids and screamed “lets do it Dude!!! “Yet for some reason this challenge made him ask WHY?  Why run across a desert and suffer all those torturous miles just to say you did!! , he could understand the fun, thrill and enjoyment of kayaking and climbing but extreme running, what was the point in that???? Why would you even consider doing it in the first place? And how can you find the motivation to go out and run the miles you need to do to be fit enough? . I didn’t really have an answer for him to be honest so I thought about it and decided I’d try to reason it out here on my blog , so here goes …….

I’ve always loved the outdoors  , running around the local countryside of the ” the Millars knowes” and “The Targets”  when I was a young boy and I loved the long days in the country with my Dad when we used to go shooting , but I was never ever excited about running or even sport for that matter … 2 years of rugby and football in High School saw me leave it behind in 3rd year for computer studies , the team mentality didn’t fit with me from an early age , maybe even at this point I was destined for a “solo” career …. Although my lack of skill with any kind of ball, probably factored highly in that decision.I did however enjoy being fit and trained hard and willingly at the local Boxing club under the watchful eye of my father , his club had a reputation for hardcore training and many a night I would leave there after tough circuits and often one thousand sit ups , bag work, pads and sparring several rounds with the likes of Ex-Scottish champion Stuart Sharkey , Paul McKechnie , James Elliot and let’s not forget Craig “sticky” Brown , I also enjoyed swimming and diving , with 60 foot cliff dives and the ability to swim 3 lengths under the water to my name before I was even out of school   … so physically I suppose I have always enjoyed  being fit even from an early age.

But being fit, physically and mentally is not something I take for granted , in my late teens I went through what was one of the most enjoyable, yet crazy and self destructive periods in my life … In my search for something different and unknown!!,  I entered the underground world of what they now call “RAVE Culture” , this was right at the beginning of a  movement from “Disco” and something  that still exists now twenty years on , clubbing , techno , drum n bass , garage , pretty much what people even now still enjoy on a Saturday nights clubbing … it all started here ,it was exciting, it was “cool” , we danced all night , partied hard , it started small and it grew to huge venues with thousands of off-their head loved up revellers ….. but it was also my introduction to drugs and later to the depression and unhappiness that has followed me sporadically throughout my life  and as is my nature I threw myself into it 110% , messed myself up badly and put myself in trouble both with the Law and with some very bad people …. this was the lowest point in my life, thankfully I was lucky enough to have a father who stepped in when things got real bad, plucked me straight out of my life kicking and screaming, call it an intervention or just a father deciding enough was enough, he did what he’s good at and sorted it , later helping  me sort my head out and made me realize that I needed to sort my whole life out. So with his and my mothers help, encouragement and support, a huge lifestyle change began, I left my old habits behind, I went back to programming, bought books on mountain and survival skills, jumped in my car and headed to the Lake district every Friday after work and for months I would spend my weekends wandering the mountains teaching myself mountain skills and enjoying the seclusion and peace, slowly strengthening and rebuilding my confidence, then along the way I discovered Rock Climbing, WOW!! this was it , finally something that I really wanted to excel in and maybe it was because I was a broken man rebuilding himself from the bottom , maybe it was just the right time in my life or maybe it was the climbing itself but I changed , a lot !! , I met some amazing people  and they helped show me the way ,  my determination and self motivation went through the roof , I trained hard , I learnt difficult climbing technique , practiced it , mastered it, I developed the exceptional mental strength climbers need to handle the huge concentration and self control needed to climb the most difficult rock faces , I was working hard , I was putting the effort in and it was repaying me with the satisfaction of self improvement , of achieving goals and the realization that with hard work and sacrifice you can achieve what you might think impossible … this is where I believe my self-motivation comes from … its engrained in me from this period in my life and It has taken me all over the world climbing, kayaking and now extreme running…. I have never let it weaken, I never will !! Ever !! ….  So Why apply this to running , well right now its where my heads at , I’ve been through hard times with my business this year , the weather , the recession and many other factors have given me numerous troubles and put intense financial pressure on me both with my business and my personal life and it continues to get tougher ,  the running has given me a focus away from this , a release , it has allowed me to get out with friends ,to get out on my own ,to let off some steam and to experience something new but at the same time it has required me to be very strong , to sort out my problems , to still be generous with my time when I see my daughter and after all that to fit in the time to run when it would be easier not to … its not been easy , yet in a way it has !!

So right now I’m out there running hundreds of miles , doing everything in my power to keep it interesting but it does get repetitive , yet I keep going despite the fact that I don’t really want to  , I enjoy it , I really do! but sometimes it takes strength to get me out the front door .. lots of it , I’m doing it because somewhere in the near future is a test of my character and fitness that I will not fail , if I do then it will not be from a lack of something that I should have done because I will do what it takes no matter what …..  I have had to apply all the lessons I have learnt over the years , and it has again rewarded me with the satisfaction that I am capable of completing what may have seemed impossible only a year ago …..I am no elite athlete, far from it!!  I am just a normal 40 something guy working hard, faultlessly doing what it takes and hopefully achieving something special because of it………….

The Big Weekend …………………

The Big Weekend …………………

Since finding out that I had an entry to the 2011 Marathon Des Sable I have been training hard, running in various Ultrathons and attending the odd desert racing Seminar to gain an insight into it all.During these events I have been fortunate enough to meet a few of the other UK entrants this year , Big Gav from Edinburgh  , Dave from Gateshead and Marti from Glasgow.I decided that we should all get together for a hard weekend of training before the main event , a chance to really test ourselves and to gel as friends before we are thrown together in a Berber tent then kicked out into the Sahara …We agreed to set it here in the Scottish Borders , easily accessible for all and with great potential for long hill runs , beautiful scenery and dry weather …  A nice settled gap in the weather appeared, so Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of January 2011 was to be the” Borders Ultra” big weekend …..

Marti arrived on Friday night , he was travelling from Glasgow so thought it best to come down early , I had met Marti during the Andrew Murray” S2S” Scottish Ultra , a race over a section of the West Highland way where we both had an amazing time  , we had a bite to eat , a few laughs and he grabbed a bed and made himself comfortable for the night .Dave and Gav arrived early on Saturday Morning , both looking fit and ready for the off , Gav is an Ironman so I thought he may be the dark horse and I wasn’t wrong , this guy is super fit and very strong .. Dave and I had met up previously and ran Kielder Marathon route together so I already knew he was a strong runner , this was going to be a tough weekend , especially as I had already clocked over 60 miles during the week , I sneaked friday as a rest day though just to help me a little. Our aim was to complete back to back 30+ mile runs on both Saturday and Sunday with well over 5000 feet of climbing … this would be tough going , certainly a test of our endurance and hopefully get to know each other better over the weeekend.

We set off from my cottage at 10 am , crossing the tops of both Minto Hills where I met Judy Allot ,treasurer of the MS Society Borders branch out walking , it was an amazing coincidence as that is the charity that I am trying to support , we all said hello and headed down to Fatlips plateau , we paused briefly at the castle to enjoy the beautiful view http://zoom.it/fgm before heading over the hills to Ancrum , Peniel then Timpendean where we climbed steeply to the skyline and ran the Justice Trail to Jedburgh Golf Course , heading up the the top of the Dunion Quarry and on to Bedrule before climbing steeply to the Summit of Ruberslaw , an extinct Volcano overlooking Hawick and the surrounding area , the lads were treated to a beautiful view with a red sky in the horizon , we shared the view with fellow mountain lover Stuart Williams who had summited at the same time with his beautiful baby daughter, we ran from the summit and descended all the way to Denholm before heading back to Horsley Hill , we all fell into my cottage cold and hungry to the smell of my mothers home made vegetable soup “Big Pats Broth” , she had brought a huge pot of it along to my house when we were out and left it with a dozen rolls …. mother we salute you !!!!

Unfortunately Gav had to head home on Saturday night for his mother in laws birthday party ,we said goodbye and promised to meet up soon for another , the rest of us showered and settled in for the night , we chilled out to Pizza and DVDs ,  I willl save sleeping on the ground for the Sahara thanks !!

On Sunday morning Marti had to pull out , his feet were too badly messed up to consider going any further , so Dave and I headed off on “The Big One” … This ran from my cottage at Horsley hill over the fields to the infamous Joogly bridge where we crossed then followed the road up Haysike , a hill that just keeps climbing and really tested our legs , from here we ran over to Acreknowe through the forest and over the hill to Stobs Camp , an old refugee camp during the second world war now used for moto rally’s , then a big calf burning push up and we were at the Penchrise Summit , the view from here is fantastic , 360 degrees of the Borders best.

From here we ran over the hills towards the Maidens Paps and down through the forest trails , I had been here before on my mountain bike but there’s something about running that makes you really connect with your environment , I was having a spiritual experience feeling euphoric and light as I ran effortlessly down the trail, maybe it was the amount of miles I had ran ,maybe it was the endorphins after more than 4 hours of constant running but something was happening as I was giggling and laughing to myself for no apparent reason.

Eventually we left the forest and ran out under Shankend Viaduct , this was coincidentally our exact 30 mile point , hitting the road was tough after all those cross country miles , it felt very hard and I painfully felt every footstep , we ran on past Earlside and down Cogsmill and through Stobs until we eventually we were finished  …. we had done it and done it well …..35 hard miles ,  We shook hands Dave and I , what an amazing day we had both had , we promised to do it again soon and he headed back to Newcastle with tired legs , sore feet and a huge grin from ear to ear .

So in a 7 day period I had ran over 125 miles , finished my week with two 30+ mile cross country runs and finished strong and uninjured , the realisation that I am now almost ready for my task ahead and that my hard work has paid off is slowly sinking in and although there has been a few moments recently where giving up has seemed the sensible thing to do I have stayed strong and hopefully all my hard work will be repaid when I step out to do battle in the Sahara …..
